A mother whose daughter was brutally raped and murdered on Christmas Day almost 30 years ago says she fears for the safety of women after her killer is released.
Doreen Soulsby's daughter, Joanne Tulip, 29, was stabbed 60 times by farm labourer Steven Ling at his home in Stamfordham, Northumberland, in 1997.
Ling was jailed for at least 20 years in 1998 at Newcastle Crown Court but this was reduced to 18 at the High Court.
Ling, who was 23 at the time of the murder, admitted rape but the charge was left to lie on file meaning he has not been classed as a sex offender.
Mrs Soulsby, who lives in Wall, near Hexham, Northumberland says she fears for the safety of women after sadistic Ling was released today.
She worries he will go undetected as he is not on the Sex Offences Register as he was not convicted of rape.
Doreen said: 'I always thought that the attack on Joanne was so bad and so sadistic that he would never be released.
'The driving force for the attack on Joanne was purely sexual. He wanted sex that night.
'The terrible sexual violence that he did to get that is very worrying. He is still preoccupied with sex children f68 in prison.

'He feels an entitlement to sex. He is still a danger. He's only 50 and he's been locked up since he was 23 - he is craving for the real thing.
'He is not on the sex offenders register, it is insane that he is not a convicted sex offender. He will be tagged but nobody can monitor him 24/7.
'There isn't enough in place to protect women from him. He has a lot of licence conditions but I still think he will break them because of the driving force of sex with him.

Joanne had never met Ling until Christmas Eve in a Stamfordham pub when she was out with her friends.
She returned to her father's flat but was persuaded by the killer to go to his house, under the premise of him having a party.

But when she got to his house, there was no one else there.
He started kissing Joanne and she tried to get away, so then he punched her and later raped her.

After the horror attack, Ling got into his car and was arrested later that night for driving under the influence of alcohol - when he admitted to killing Joanne.
Mr Justice Potts told Ling: 'You inflicted appalling injuries on (Ms Tulip) while you were having sexual relations with her. I'm also satisfied that there was in your motivation an aspiration of sadism.'
He added: 'You will never be released so long as it is thought you constitute a danger to women.'
Doreen claims she has not seen a picture of Ling since 1997 - and fears she will not recognise the killer.
She added: 'I have asked for a photograph of him but it's been turned down.
'It's been 27 years since I have seen him. I don't know what he looks like now.
'I knew what he looked like then.'

The devastated mum fears that Ling will reoffend after his release and has slammed the parole board's decision.
She added: 'They say he has done all the treatments and courses in prison and he has ticked all the boxes. But he has done them as a tick box.
'It's the way his head is, it's the way he is made. He is high risk of reoffending. He will break his licence conditions and sex will be the driving force.
'I have been given a life sentence. He is a bad person. They have stuck him straight into the community which shocked us all. We expected an open prison recommendation.
'It's scary that he has been let out after 27 years. It's going to be hard for him to integrate back into society.'
